This painting was inspired by a creative conversation with a cancer patient who was facing a difficult treatment. In our art therapy session we spoke about the creative things she loved to do and what she was looking forward to as spring arrived. The older woman was an avid gardener who gave me an animated description of the perennial gardens at her home overlooking the Rachel Carson Nation Wildlife Refuge in Maine. I asked her how she saw herself at that moment and she gently told me that she could “see herself as a little blue bird flying high above her garden”.
