Love Is Creative

Because we love we create.

Love is creative. Loving and being loved opens the flow of creativity. Like a free fall into amour, creativity requires taking a risk and letting go, and trusting this enlivened flow, leaning into it, to see what the Universe offers. The artistic free will to express with an open heart can move us to create something of value for Self, others, and the world. Inspired by infatuation, we express our thoughts and feelings, our needs and desires. Because we love, we create our best lives.

Love motivates creativity. A spark that lights the way, it is our co-creator that fuels the process. It kindles purpose and ignites passion. When ardor leads, doing a loved creative thing expresses our true voice, fully, clearly, and unconditionally. Art-making, art-taking, and art-giving are ways we feel and express affection and experience this joy. An artist mentor of mine wore a necklace with beads that spelled, art loves you. She would jiggle them and smile as she offered her cure-all blessing and a hug. The devotion of self-nurture and self-care through creative self-expression is healing. A ready-remedy in your medicine bag, it is always there to affirm and comfort.

Love knows that life is not always easy, so it gives the gift of creative resiliency to keep us strong and balanced. Devotion helps our creativity turn obstacles into benefactors. It is how and why we create hope. In the good times and bad, happy and sad, love rises to uplift our mind-body-spirit and to remind us what is most essential and meaningful. The art of life could not exist without love, nor a flower without the sun. It just is.

With color, light, and wet paint I make images of the sentiment I feel. With head, hands, and heart I craft my ideas and visions. Creativity is an angel in my pocket, a muse who gives me the stamina and confidence to do anything. She is me and I am she. She is love and love is eternal and creative. Like an angel, it is an affinity that never leaves. And, with a wink and a nod, she lifts me up with wings to fly. Creativity loves me, and so blessed, I make art with hope and all my love.

To love and be loved, to create and be created for, celebrate the season of love with creativity.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Artwork is work.

Painting is not just painting. It is looking, seeing, and recording what is observed. It is feeling and expressing. It is a way to swim in a visual medium that, like swimming, takes practice.

Being good at any creative discipline takes practice. It is called artwork because it is work. To practice creativity you need to show up in the creative moment and do the work that flow requires. It is challenging because pure creative flow can happen at any time and in any environment. It can happen when working, learning, sporting, playing, or dreaming; and sometimes when showering. However inspiration comes, creativity is a movement. It is intuition, improvisation, and innovation. Finding ways and time to get a creative process moving must complement your lifestyle. To make a sketch, note a lyric, buy an ingredient for a new recipe, make travel plans, or record a novel idea is not always easy in the timeline of a busy day. Like making time for a workout or spending quality time with a friend, when creative practice is a priority we benefit, and the creativity that we are practicing gets better and better, deeper and deeper. A creative practice is something that enriches us in an on-going process that we enjoy and look forward to doing. To master our creativity we need to practice, practice, practice, not because it is a way to get to Carnegie Hall, because it is a way to wellness. Continue Reading
